Babies in Lockdown.

The Blake Gallery, Woodville Theatre, Gravesend.

In collaboration with Daisy Farris Dance Collective, ‘These 4 Walls’.

As part of new work for ‘These 4 Walls’ I have produced a collection of textile and text art works. For the past year I have been Lead Artist with Playground, an arts project for 0 – 24 month babies taking place in Libraries and Children’s Centre’s across Kent. As a visual artist this has given me an insight into the effect the pandemic has had on families that had a newborn baby during this time.

The Covid – 19 pandemic has had a negative effect on many parents and families, with reports of parental loneliness and loss of social connections having a negative impact on their emotional well being (HM Government, 2021). As a result babies born during Lockdown have been significantly affected by the pandemic with no or limited social contact other than their immediate families (Goodman, 2022).

I talked to parents and carers about giving birth in Lockdown and the weeks that followed as they adjusted to being a new family in such difficult times. In our initial research for These 4 Walls Daisy and I explored mental health issues experienced during the pandemic, my new work focus’s on parents reflections and memories from their unique experience during Lockdown.
